Message from the Vice-Chancellor
I wish to express my gratitude to the Board of Directors and the Governance Council members of this young but vibrant institution of higher learning for entrusting me with the responsibility to lead and provide strategic direction as Vice Chancellor. I acknowledge the great efforts and concrete commitments that the founders of this great institution and the boar, especially the Chair Board of Directors, have made to make this a truly competitive institution of higher learning. My vision is to make KIM University a modern research driven and market responsive institution that nurtures talents.
Our New Brand
Our rebranding, from Kigali Institute of Management to KIM University, signals our new strategic orientation. The acronym KIM encapsulates our strategic intent. As a University we strive to provide knowledge (“K”) suffused with the skill sets and requisite competencies that the market requires. Our programs are market responsive and inspire (“I”) creativity and a sense of self-worth in our students, and motivate (“M”) them to attain their dreams in life.
Our Strategic Priorities
KIMU has distinguished itself as a competitive player in the education industry in Rwanda, providing market-driven programs. We wish to build on this by leveraging on the following strategic priorities.
Establishing Open and e-Learning Culture
KIMU has a sound IT infrastructure which has a great potential to serve an important pedagogical tool. We intend to make IT a key driver of our education system and culture, ensuring that both the contents and contexts of our programs are compliant with and meet the best ICT standards. Integrating ICT in to the delivery structure not only addresses the problems of inefficiency in delivery but also serves as an important measure for cost management in the long run. Moving beyond the traditional ‘brick and mortar’ delivery system towards a blended learning will enable students to engage more effectively in the learning process. The dream of learner-based education can best be achieved by harnessing our existing technological capabilities. We intend to render technology an important enabling strategic decision tool for generating practical solutions for business problems. We are set to integrate Capsim decision software as strategic decision tool for our maiden MBA and Executive Leadership programs.
Developing new market relevant, transformational and innovative programs
taking in account the employment needs of our students and in response to the Government’s strategic priorities, as well as the regional and African-wide economic needs, we intend to launch practical, skill based programs such as tourism and hotel management. This will enable our students to actively engage in tourism sector. In response to the global challenge of cyber- security, we shall launch practical courses offer practical skills to our graduates to counter security threats emanating from cybercrimes particularly in the areas of Banking, Finance, and Insurance.
The wealth of any nation greatly depends on the health of its citizens. Aware that quite apart from lack of access to adequate health facilities, a key challenge in the health sector is effective management of the health facilities and resources, KIMU will leverage its competency in business and professional courses to develop health care management programs and managerial skills to health care professionals.
Mainstreaming Professional & Vocational skills
While promoting academic excellence and ensuring all our programs meet the highest standards established by HEC and other quality organs (national, regional and global) we shall ensure that our courses are skill based. For instance, our graduate in computer science will come out ready for the job market with distinctive requisite skills certification such as Cyberoam Certified Network and Security Professional (CCNSP).The same with bachelor in business management graduates will come out ready for the job market with a certified public accounting qualification.
Centers for Research and Development
To foster an effective and constructive partnership between KIMU, the society and other partners locally and internationally, we shall establish centers that respond to the triple pillars of academic excellence, industry relevance and socio-economic transformation or the pursuit of the common good. We place special emphasis on research centers which promote the economic health and well-being of the population, the disadvantages members of the society, gender and leadership.
Community Outreach and Urban Plunge
Institutions of higher learning are called to connect with industry and the society at large and assume their role as agents of social transformation. Community-based engagement does not only entail leveraging our knowledge and skills to the benefit of communities but also provides a platform for experiential learning for our students and leads to new knowledge and /or new approaches to addressing socio-economic issues of our time. Our KIMU students shall take the lead in developing communities around us. This partnership will strengthen the bond between KIMU and the community.
It is our unrelenting commitment to ensure that all our academic programs, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities meet the highest standards required by the Higher Education Council, Inter-University Council of East Africa, the African Union and the global education industry. To ensure that quality is not an after-thought, the directorate of Quality Assurance is housed in the Vice Chancellor’s office. KIMU’s quality standards are not isolated sets of policies but part of an industry-wide pursuit. We have been chosen as the only academic institution of higher learning in the country to undertake the ISO 9001:2015 certification. In acknowledgement of our commitment to quality standards, KIMU has also been nominated to the National Mirror Committee on Educational Organization Management System.
Finally, and most importantly Students’ and staff experience are at the heart of what universities do and this tenet continues to steer KIMU University’s strategic decisions and goals. Since the first students passed through our doors, we have been giving them a competitive edge for the future: enabling them to not only succeed academically but to develop much valued skills and real experience. A systematic mentorship program has been developed to ensure that KIM University students find the pastoral, academic and emotional support they need to succeed in their studies and beyond. What gives the KIMU’s graduates an edge with their future employers is a hands-on knowledge in their particular professions. To adequately prepare students for the dynamic labour market, the University fosters partnerships with leading organizations and industrial partners. With the relevant input from stakeholders, the University’s courses are tailored to equip our graduates with leading edge skills for the workplace. Already, many of our graduates are exposed to new employment opportunities by working on ‘live’ projects during their study, or through course related placements. The quality and relevance of our research informed and competency driven programs is well attested by the high employability of our graduates in leading organizations including public sector.
As we look to the future, KIM University is in a strong position to meet the challenges of a changing Higher Education landscape and the economy. Thankfully, we are not alone in this. We have committed partners in the public and private sectors as well as sister Universities who stand with us as we strive to achieve our goals. Uganda Technology and Management University (UTAMA) and the Catholic University of Milan deserve special mention as our strategic partners. We will continue to fulfill our aim to contribute to the wider world with our research, scholarship, teaching and learning, and ensure we prosper as a thriving university of excellence.
